Aren't options too complicated for the typical commodity investor?
No. Options are dynamic sophisticated instruments. However, if the investor takes the time to learn the fundamentals of option pricing, options are a very viable tool for many commodity investors. See Courses to learn more.
Do you have to exercise your option to liquidate?
No. When you buy (sell) an option you can simply sell (buy) it back to liquidate the position. In fact, the majority of options are never exercised. They are simply offset and liquidated, or they expire worthless.
Why would anyone ever sell an option?
When you buy an option you have limited risk and unlimited profit potential. When you sell an option you have unlimited risk and limited profit potential. The reason traders sell options is because the mathematical odds may favor the option seller. Many large institutional traders frequently sell options to take advantage of the odds.
